Behold. An old, dusty, busted and scratched up credenza found while cleaning out my boyfriend J's father's storage unit one long Saturday afternoon. It was part of a custom built wall unit, left behind by a previous tenant, and J's father was eager to see it go. We took a closer look at this sad piece of furniture, and noticed it was actually well-constructed of quality solid wood. I rather liked it's long, thin shape and the gold cutout screens on the doors and thought hmmmm...this thing totally has potential. I quickly asserted that we were going to lug the credenza to my parent's garage, where I would attempt to transform it into something more modern. I'm lucky my boyfriend humors my crazy ideas, because off we drove in his Jeep to the suburbs, hauling a beaten down credenza and my aspiration of pulling off a DIY miracle.
I had no true game plan at first, but had recently developed a fixation on metallic furniture.

And Boom! I made the bold decision to paint this baby silver!
J offered to help me with my ridiculous self-imposed task, but I was adamant about doing it myself. Three days, a snowstorm, and one emotional breakdown later, high from the fumes with paint in my hair, I had finished. I'll spare you any additional details, but this was the final result:
Our "new" shiny silver credenza is now nestled against a wall in our dining room. This is my testament that it is possible for one crazy girl armed with some sandpaper, primer, and paint, to successfully revive an old piece of furniture. I'm ecstatic with the way it turned out, and feel a sense of accomplishment every time I look at it!
(I plan on using this as my entry into the Urban Outfitters- This Into That contest. Wish me luck!)
this cabinet is absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteah great job! it looks fantastic! i was thinking... maybe you could even paint the detailed screens on the front black or stain it a darker color to make your dinig room furniture.. but i may just be over anxious about projects too :P

Thanks, Stina! :)
ReplyDeleteI wrestled with a lot of ideas about what color to paint the credenza, but ultimately decided I wanted to make it into a statement piece. I'm not a fan of matchy matchy (i.e. dining sets, bedroom sets), and was reaallly reaaaaally wanting a piece of silver furniture. Most metallic furniture is extremely over-priced, so this was my perfect opportunity!
So nice to reconnect with you on here! Hope to talk more often~
